Adoption Network

Last night our family was so very blessed to be invited to the home of a family right smack in the middle of their Ethiopian adoption process. We had a fantastic time! They are a really great family! They asked questions about our adoption process and we shared lots of details. We ate, the kids played, we laughed and we thanked God for the gift of children. There was a time when I could not have imagined being on this side of the adoption conversation. There was also a time when we had no idea how many Ethiopian children were going to find homes right here in our community. I don't know if I can explain how that feels. When we said yes to God's plan for us to bring Hanna home from Ethiopia, one of the fears I had was that she would be such a minority and I hoped that she would be ok with that down the road. God has taken away that silly fear of mine. For one, Hanna is one of a kind for so many reasons. Being Ethiopian American is just one piece of her. But now, we have had contact with 4 other families right in our community that are in the process of bringing orphaned Ethiopian children into their families. It felt good to say yes to God when we were the odd men out. It feels even better to watch Him provide us with this wonderful network of adoptive families to share our joy with!

T Minus 3 Weeks!

In three very short weeks, we will hopefully be able to find out the gender of the newest member of the Slager family. I am very excited! The boys are also very excited. Chris doesn't get his pants in a bunch over much. I'm sure he's excited, he just doesn't show it.

I can't wait to post it right here on this very blog! You can all say a prayer that the little "lizard" will not have crossed legs. It really would be just my luck if that happened.

Hard to believe that we'll be half way to baby in just three weeks. I wonder if we'll be ready......hmmm...I don't think the baby cares if we're ready or not...that's a funny thing about babies.

Happy Gotcha Day Hanna Rae!

On this day, one year ago, our family woke up in a lovely downtown Detroit hotel. We were anxiously awaiting the arrival of our sweet Hanna Rae from Ethiopia. It was such a strange feeling to know we'd finally be meeting and holding the precious little girl that we'd been thinking about and praying for for so long.

That day feels like an eternity ago and Hanna has grown and blossomed so much in this past year. What a blessing she is to our family! There just aren't words to describe the thankfulness we feel to God for bringing Hanna into our lives.

Happy Gotcha Day Hanna Rae!! We love you so very much!!!

Happy Easter!

Here are some pictures from our Easter happenings. The kids enjoyed a neighborhood Easter egg hunt. It was a little chilly but at least there wasn't any snow. We did the hunt last Thursday after hearing the forecast for snow this weekend.

The other picture is from this morning. The boys wanted to know why they had to where button shirts that tuck in and belts. I couldn't honestly tell them why the extra fuss with clothes on Easter so I just told them, "because Mom says so". They dropped their weapons so I guess it worked for them. I hope that it doesn't ever stop working.

Hope you all had a blessed Easter!

Field Trip

I was so lucky to be able to join Lukas Jay on a field trip to see the butterflies blooming. We rode the bus there. Lukas sat at the back with all of his buddies. They giggled the whole way. What is it about the back of the bus and mischief? They seem to go hand in hand. We were able to tour the flower areas, the butterfly area and all of the outdoor kids' area. It was such a beautiful day. The butterflies were very active because of the sun and heat. It was amazing to see all of the different butterflies and just so many in one place. I really enjoyed this day with Lukas. It's not very often that I get to spend time with just him. He is a very special boy and I sure do love him!

Here are some pics from the day:

18 Months Already!

Yahoo for My Mom!

I would just like to say yahoo for my mom. Just when I was done with making dinner this week, she makes my day and invites the children and I to dinner with her. I have enjoyed the act of sitting down with the kids for dinner, it's always entertaining. I am just very tired of their favorite foods. (Enter Mom) On the menu for the evening: Baked Salmom, a tossed salad and steamed veggies.......YESSSS! Now that's a meal. The kids will be having baked chicken with a side of who knows what, probably applesauce. I mustn't forget the ever popular side of rolls with honey! I'm sure she has no idea what joy she has brought me today. I'll be sure to say "yahoo for you Mom!".

A Poem for Today

With nothing but mud as far as the eye can see and the vaccuum hose can reach, I thought this was a fitting little poem to share today.

Dirt is My Friend

I love dirt...dirt is my buddy.
It won't make me eat spinach or call me names
And when I get dirty it's dirt that I'll blame.
I can play in it and lay in it and eat it for a snack
Or whack it with a stick and it won't hit back.
Dirt just lays there and doesn't make any noise...
But it's a good friend to little girls and boys.
Patsy Gaut

(too bad moms don't love dirt as much as those little girls and boys!)

Dinner Time Blahs

I am so done with dinner! I'm all out of healthy, happy recipes that the whole family says "yay" to. I'm tired of trying to think of what to make. I'm tired of shopping for things to make. I'm tired of making things to eat. I'm tired. Anyone know of a FREE service that will make all of your meals and the meals are delicious and healthy and all of us will enjoy them? No? Shoot.

Good Day Sunshine

It is a good day. The sun is shining. Spring is on the horizon, even though we all know winter will try to hang on as long as it can. It's a school day, which means the children have something constructive to do that I did not have to think of. The children are all on their way back from a yucky little bug they picked up. There are no major household disasters that need my immediate attention, such as a mountain of laundry or things growing in a bathroom. Yes indeed, it is a good day.

Riddle

Question: What is free, relatively easy to make, makes for hours of fun, gets louder the faster you go, was something ALL of us had (or should have had) as kids and goes "tick-a-tick-a-tick-a-tick-a"?

Answer: The old card in the bicycle spokes!!! The boys made their own out of pieces of card board yesterday and have been riding their "motorcycles" ever since. What fun. I remember doing that with my brothers when we were little. Hearing that sound yesterday brought back some fond memories of when I was cool (reality check: I just thought I was).

Sick Day Over

After seeing all of his buddies out on the playground two times this morning with OUT him, he decided he wasn't that sick afterall. A little extra sleep this morning. A few extra cartoons. A little bit of extra pestering for the siblings. Lunch at McDonald's and back to school before lunch recess. It's beautiful thing! Don't count on it happening again though Mister!

Sick Day

Bummer! Derek isn't feeling well this morning so no school for him. I feel a little guilty to say that it also really messes with my day! Oh well, this is what moms are for, right?! I'm hoping that the "mom rule" holds true here. Oh, what's the "mom rule"? It says that everyone in the entire family can catch the illness but moms get immunity. It's their reward for having to deal with a sick family. It should be anyway. If I made the rules, this would be one. Well, I'm off to put on my best sympathy face in order to pamper my rather large, but still extremely precious baby boy.

Spring Fever

Anyone else ready for Spring?!? Enough with the snow already! I noticed on the 8 day forecast (or "worthless" forecast as my husband refers to it) that next week this time we are expected to have temps in the upper 40's to 50's. Also, don't get too excited as it will probably change, but we are supposed to have SUNSHINE too!!!!! Wow, now that's what I'm talking about. With all this snow to melt and all that un-landscaped yard we own, I'll probably be cursing the mud next week. I'll admit it, I'm always wanting what I do not have. COME ON SPRING!!!!!
